We are an ordinary family of three, living in a 2-bedroom apartment, busy hustling to pay our monthly bills. Hence, having another member of the family was out of the equation.
Until one day, my husband came home with a dirty, thin, and wounded female cat. We had no clue what to do. My daughter bathe her and we took her to the vet. It was tough in terms of the financial aspect but here are the things we learned along the way:
1. Companionship and Emotional Support: When I had my surgery last September 2023, Nala was my sole companion at home the whole day while my husband was at work and my daughter was at school. I can’t explain the warmth and comfort she gave me by simply lying next to me when I could barely move and was in pain.
2. Sense of Purpose and Responsibility: All my life, my reason to get up in the morning is to provide for my family. That changed when Nala joined us. Making sure she is well-fed and has a clean litter gives us a different perspective on our daily living.
3. Improved Mental Health: I was clinically diagnosed with mild depression. It started last 2020 with the sudden demise of my father. I cannot say for sure that Nala has helped me but I can tell that every time she is lying on my tummy or breast and starts purring, the calmness it gives me is soothing and gives me some kind of peace.
4. Sense of contribution: There are many abandoned cats in town especially when female, unspayed cats reach on their heat. The thought that it somehow able us to rescue 4 cats to date made us feel that we contribute to the welfare of cats, especially during the peak of the summer or winter season.
5. Learning Patience and Understanding: Until today, we have a total of 4 rescued cats. Each has its own personality and tricks. But we managed to learn to understand and accept each of their uniqueness non-verbally.
6. Community and Connections: We used to live our lives on our own. Less friends, less headache. However, rescuing cats able us to meet new people who share the same passion for rescuing abandoned cats and dogs. And building a community of like-minded people is refreshing.
7. Educational Opportunities: In the beginning, we had no clue how to take care of cats, their health, and their rights. But slowly we became aware of responsible pet ownership at the very least.
8. Unconditional Love: Cats are known for their sensitivity and deep territorial habits. At this stage, we are glad we can bond and deepen our love and care with our 4 rescued cats.
Rescuing, adopting, and fostering cats not only changes our lives but also enriches our empathy and deeper connection with the animal world.
